Use Condoms

Condoms are considered a barrier device used to reduce the chance of pregnancy or STI (sexually transmitted infections) during sex. Condoms work by being placed over a man’s erected penis and catching the semen from entering the body of the sexual partner.

So why use condoms?

  • They offer the best protection against most STIs and HIV. (Remember condoms are not 100% effective. They don’t offer complete protection against herpes or HPV.)
  • They will help protect you and your partner during oral sex.
  • They are inexpensive and can be found at any pharmacy. You can get condoms for free at most sexual health clinics.
  • They come in a variety of sizes, textures, and flavors, so make sure to experiment and find the ones you like best.
  • They are small enough to carry in your pocket, purse, or wallet.

Always remember:

  • Condoms do expire so make sure to always check the date on your condom.
  • Condoms can break while you are opening them (watch out for long finger nails and don’t open the package with your teeth).
  • They may break during sex (checking the expiry date and using a water based lube will help prevent this).
  • Condoms may leak while you are taking them off after sex. Always make sure the penis is still erect when you pull out and hold the condom at the base of the penis to make sure it doesn’t leak.
  • Condoms may loss their effectiveness if they are kept in extreme temperatures or if the package has been damaged.
