The Positive Space Program

Although there have been recent advancements around the protection of the rights of LGBT communities, phobia's surrounding LGBT individuals are still a very real issue in Canada. Isolation, decreased self-esteem and decreased confidence may be experienced by LGBT individuals who do not have access to a healthy and supportive network of people. These factors can negatively affect many aspects of their lives including mental and physical health which is why it is so important to have programs such as the positive space.

The Positive Space Program aims to create a network of allies. The program provides education regarding the experiences of LGBT community members. Through this education, it is possible to create an environment which is affirmative for all members of the community regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

The Positive Space Program also focuses on the recognition and acknowledgement of LGBT individuals living in rural communities. Furthermore, this program encourages rural communities to celebrate the diversity and uniqueness of the LGBT population within their community. This is especially important because those who identifiy as LGBT in rural areas are smaller and the importance of ally support becomes crucial. The Positive Space Program provides the LGBT and non-LGBT community with a space where positive exchange can occur.

Objectives of the Positive Space Program

  • To provide LGBT communities with visibility and support;
  • To specify where LGBT-positive spaces are as well as make public individuals who are able to offer information and referrals, This may be done through the use of stickers, posters and buttons;
  • To bring about awareness of the diversity which is present within the community;
  • To become conscious of the presence of subtle as well as obvious forms of heterosexism, transphobia and homophobia
