For Healthcare Providers
Terminology
It is important to be familiar with certain terms when reading through
the literature provided. The terminology section of the website
provides readers with terms which will be commonly used throughout the
articles/websites and summaries. Definitions are also included which
are crucial to know when practicing with lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transsexual, transgendered, two-spirited, intersexed, questioning and
queer clients (LGBTT-2IQQ). For a complete list of terms, click here.
Please remember when referring to LGBTT-2IQQ people, the context in
which certain words and terms are used is continuously changing and
adapting. For instance, a man may self identify as a fag reclaiming
the meaning of the word. In this context, the word "fag" is
empowering rather than derogatory. However, the use of the word fag in
as an insult is oppressing. In this context it meant as a derogatory
word to directly harm someone. As this example demonstrates, many
words to do with sexuality and gender may have varied meaning and it
is important to take into consideration the context in which a word is
used in order to fully understand its meaning.
