Terminology

The definitions which are included in the terminology list are some of the most commonly used terms in the English language in North America when referring to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgendered, two-spirited, intersexed questioning and queer LGBTT-2IQQ population. These definitions will help you to better understand and correctly use some common terms related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

Please remember when referring to LGBTT-2IQQ people, the context in which certain words and terms are used is continuously changing and adapting. For instance, a man may self identify as a fag reclaiming the meaning of the word. In this context, the word "fag" is empowering rather than derogatory. However, the use of the word fag in as an insult is oppressing. In this context it meant as a derogatory word to directly harm someone. As this example demonstrates, many words to do with sexuality and gender may have varied meaning and it is important to take into consideration the context in which a word is used in order to fully understand its meaning.
